Public Art at SunTrust Park: Hank Aaron Statue Commissioned from Atlanta Artist

The Atlanta Braves have chosen to commission an all-new statue of Hank Aaron for SunTrust Park from renowned Atlanta artist Ross Rossin. This announcement comes after some controversy developed over talks of moving an older statue from the Braves’ former home Turner Field. The older statue will remain with the Atlanta Fulton County Recreational Authority.

Christening a new development with a brand new piece of commissioned art seems like good luck for a new stadium, and we can’t wait to see Ross Rossin’s fresh take on the baseball legend. Hank Aaron is no new subject matter for the artist–Rossin painted a portrait of Aaron that was shown in the Smithsonian in 2014, which likely influenced the Braves’ decision to approach him for this commission. Rossin is also known for his portraits of other prominent Atlantans, making him a great choice for pride of place.

No one can yet say for sure, but there may be more to come for SunTrust Park in terms of homage to Aaron, “the greatest Brave of all time.” The Braves announced the new statue will be “part of” a showcase on Hank Aaron’s history and legacy for the new home stadium. Baseball history fans, keep those fingers crossed.
